Bloody Brits

I posted in September about Bloody Brits Press, an imprint that seeks to put hard-to-find British crime fiction in American readers' hands. Their catalogue includes names such as Chaz Brenchley, Sarah Diamond, Joyce Holms, Bill Kirton, John Malcolm, Val McDermid, Danuta Rhea and Chris Simms. I remember liking the idea behind the imprint, and I thought it might be time to talk about it again. OK, I know something about Val McDermid, but I admit I've read none of these writers. What should I know about them?

I've not read any but VMcD, but I do know that Simms is considered a bit of rising star in the UK crime fiction world. He was an interesting speaker at Harrogate this year and he caught the imagination of a number of us when we discovered his first novel had a motorway setting. I have a couple of his novels in my TBR pile, but I'm not sure when I may get around to them.

You need to know that Val McDermid is a MUST READ and you must do that at once.

A Place of Execution is one of the 5-10 best books of the last 10 years.

Read it.

Where, oh where has my new blog gone, Hamish? I took it down after a couple of days -- and after a reporter for one of the weekly papers here in Philadelphia had interviewed me about it. I made the decision after someone posted a question about the economics of my company that would have take a fair amount of research to answer. I decided that the blog was not worth the effort, that it would only make me think more about my bad work situation. I'd rather put my creative energy into forgetting the current work situation -- and finding places to send my resume so I can get out.

Instead, I'll make a work-related post on this blog from time to time. In fact, I'm thinking of one right now -- as soon as I make some crime-fiction posts that I have in mind. Thanks for asking!

Crimeficreader:

Thanks for the heads-up on Simms. I've read a few novels that had an interesting scene or two on motorways. I'll add him to my to-read list. Hmm, perhaps I could offer a holiday present to the readers of this blog: a list of all the novels I've read based on their recommendations. It's been an enjoyable list so far.

Re Val McDermid, I'll refer you to that post from Jeff. I have a feeling he likes her work.

Jeff:

Val McDermid's name is familiar to me but, oddly enough, I know nothing of her work. But she'll shoot pretty far up my too-look-into list now because of your recommendation. Thanks.
